What to expect on a "typical" day on the river...
A float with Confluence Casting begins in Derby Junction, at the confluence of the Colorado River and Derby Creek. Sometimes guests catch a trout at the mouth of the creek before we've set off down the river! The first few miles of the trip wind through a fairly placid and scenic canyon, with numerous eddies along the way holding brown trout and the occasional rainbow.
After passing the midway point, the nature of the float changes quite a bit! The canyon walls close in and turn deep red, as we enter the section along a BLM Wilderness Study Area called Bull Gulch. The river becomes narrower and faster here, and we pass through Pinball Rapid. Then comes the scenic highlight of the trip as we pass the colorful rock hoodoos in Jack Flats. Fishy water lies all along this canyon area of the river, although its so pretty you might forget that you have a fishing rod in your hand! Three miles downriver from Jack Flats we finish our trip where we started, at our shop (which is where your car will be waiting for you), with no more shuttling to do!
Of course, all that said there is no really "typical" float with Confluence Casting, which is one of the great things about floating with us! We do our best to create whatever river experience you want to have, and for that reason no two floats are exactly alike. Fly fishing or spin fishing, whether you are fishing for the first time, or are so good at it that you can teach us a thing or two, we are confident that the day you spend with us will be one of the highlights of your year!
